DA Front page 'Popular' system

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 17, 2012, 7:46 AM

Is this something you find unfair? Some of the devs I watch seems to think so.

Personally, it is one of the goals I have set for myself, but I am not really bothered about it.

Based on experience, if you want more watchers/faves/comments, keep drawing, keep improving, give feedback to others, do some fan-art etc, Well, I'm sure you already know these stuff! =P

Share your thoughts.

Cheers!
Francis

I think overall it's really hard to find a system that is really all that fair. I appreciate DA is trying, but it sure is a shame people have done the dishonourable thing and put things in the wrong categories.

That being said, I think people rely on front page/daily deviations/advertising to be popular too much. There's a secret to being popular, and it's simply draw well - and people will come.

As much as I agree that improoving quality should be what we're here for a lot of us not only not get noticed and barely ever get comments, but everytime dA comes out with a tool to help us get out there (Thumbshare, DD's, Groups, now this) it quickly gets abused by the already popular of mediocre quality (looking at badly photographed boobs, ponies and anime tracings) keeping the intermediate artist forever in the unknown.

When no matter how hard and well you work, you don't get a single comment or critique unless you spend hours of dedicated networking to get them, you realize there's something wrong with the system.

That's what I'm saying. The system doesn't work. The only thing you can do is just draw more.

I saw that. I could really care less, whether my stuff gets noticed and adored by all isn't important to me. Just so long as somebody's looking =P

I saw this earlier this morning and I didn't really get it. One of their complaints was that people who work hours on a piece won't get that front page slot because of the new rules, so someone who spent like five minutes on something gets their stuff put up on the front instead. I don't buy that at all. Time is completely irrelevant to the nature of a quality piece of work. Someone with beginners art skills might spend HOURS working on what a brilliant artist could do in five minutes. Does that mean the beginner spending hours is automatically better than the pro? Not automatically, no. And besides, the aesthetic quality of art is completely subjective.

For example, I have a lot of trouble considering photography a serious form of art unless extensive artistic ends have been taken IN the photograph (like cosplaying and taking photoshoots with those outfits or something). Otherwise, I think photography is just taking pictures of someone else's work. Like if I went up to your art and took a picture at a skewed angle or something and changed the color to sepia, would you consider that MY art? ... Hell, I wouldn't. So, when someone takes a picture of a flower it's like "Oh, that's nice I guess" but they didn't DO anything. They didn't make the flower, they just fiddled with the color settings in photoshop or something. I don't know, I realize people would argue the hell out of me on that and I really truly do try to see photography as a true art form, but it's difficult for me. Wow I got off track! Anyway.

I will say that I'm annoyed as hell at all the really shitty shots of boobs or vaginas that wind up on the front page. THOSE get a billion favs, but you can tell for a lot of them that no artistic quality or effort was put into them. It was "Hey, show me your boobs so I can take a picture" I hate that shit. That'll fire me up when I see it, but I try to ignore it because honestly I don't even spend two seconds on the front page.

I did love how the people who put those complaints up seemed to be super popular artists. And of course, in tow comes their league of loyal followers. I've unwatched artists who get full of themselves because it ruins their artwork for me. There was another really popular artist on DA I was watching because I loved their work, but they made many comments about the front page as if it was their right to be on there, not those shitty artists of lesser quality than they. I can't stand people like that. It's one thing to take pride in you work and really know that you're just an outstanding artist, but it's another to suddenly think you're this figure of authority and have certain rights that other people don't. Bullshit.

There's my two cents c:

Good question :/ Maybe they just felt offended that their work might not be put up? Maybe it's like I was saying about some artists developing a feeling of "this is my right" to be on the front page?
